Home business ideas for moms

Many people, especially stay at home moms, are looking for ways to earn money from the comfort of their homes. One thing that you should consider is starting your own clothing "thrift" store. The start up costs are very little, if any, and the products you will sell are things every family in America needs. Here is a basic guide that can get your store up and going in no time!

One of the first things you should do is to put together your business plan. This should include what items you want to include in your store, as well as when your store will be open. You also need to designate an area in your home, where your products can be displayed in a professional manner.

Having decided upon the what, where, and when of your store, now comes time to find the items to stock your store. This can be a bit time consuming, but with a little research you can find the items you want at low or no cost. Starting a business can be hard, and the less upfront costs you have the better off you will be.

To find the "inventory" for your store, make your first stop the Internet. More to the point look at sites such as:

1.) Craigslist - Craigslist is offered in most states. This is by far one of my favorite sites. While there are listings for all manner of things being sold, there is a section for FREE items only. I have seen many postings made by people who are giving away various items, including bags of clothes. All you have to do is drive to their home and pick them up. Free inventory for your store is always a good thing!

2.) Yahoo - Yahoo Groups will open the door to another abundance of FREE items. If you search Yahoo's Groups, odds are that you will find a "Freecycle" group for your state, or even town. A Freecycle group is just what it sounds like. A place to recycle the items people no longer want or need - and it must be free. Once again, you drive to their home, and pick up the items.

3.) eBay - Unlike the other two suggestions, eBay will require some money upfront. But, if you do some research, you will be able to find clothing "lots" that will sell for a very reasonable price. A lot of listings on eBay include "free shipping", so the only money you put out will be for the clothing you buy.

Once you have some inventory for your "store", it is time to get the word out. Advertise your business in your local newspapers, hang posters on bus stops or at the grocery store. Find on-line classifieds for your area and post an ad there. Be sure to include your number!

While waiting for your new customers, make sure you wash the clothing you will be selling. No one is going to buy clothing that smells bad, or looks dirty. Remove any items that are stained. Use price sticks (they can be bought at any Walmart, dollar store, or Walgreens). Try sticking them to the tags in clothing. They stick well there, and can be easily seen. Neatly hang or fold your inventory.

Additional Tips:

1.) When first starting, it may be better to advertise your store is by appointment only. Otherwise people may be popping over when you lest expect it!

2.) Check local yard sales for great deals

3.) Be sure to stop by some local thrift stores. Their prices are cheap everyday.
