Online classes are a great way to pursue higher education and get a college degree. This is especially true for those who are unable to attend traditional classes on campus due to family or work responsibilities. Years ago if you couldn't make it to campus, getting a college degree was very difficult because school from home opportunities were few and far between.

Today's educational opportunities are vast. Online education is probably one of the most utilized platforms to learn nowadays. Even traditional classrooms are incorporating Internet components to the class. As a result most students today have probably had some sort of experience with learning online.

While online classes are a great convenience, this does not mean the classes are easier than traditional coursework. If anything there is a degree of more difficulty due to the flexible structure. Succeeding in online classes requires strong levels of participation, time management and organization.

Here are a few tips on how to participate in online classes and succeed in your classes:

• Keep the Syllabus Handy

The first thing you want to do is to download the syllabus and make note of any important dates. Online classes usually are structured in either one or two week segments and you'll need to hand in assignments, do your readings and participate in discussions which pertain to each week's lesson.

There are classes which are designed to have tests for small windows of time. Most are given a week time frame, but I've taken a few where exams only open over a weekend or during certain hours of a specific day. The latter is rare, but it does happen, and you want to make sure you don't miss important deadlines.

If you keep the syllabus handy, it will be easier to note the dates you have to participate in discussions and exams.

• Pace Yourself

Not unlike traditional 'brick and mortar' classes, it is easy to get lost in online classes if you don't pace yourself. Participating in online classes is probably more difficult to catch up if you frequently miss logging in.

Many schools require you post a certain amount of time each week in the discussions and mandate this occurs on different days. Not only is there a minimum number to meet for posting, but the comments you make have to be of quality. A simple one word answer, or in many cases, one or two sentences isn't enough.

With online courses is important to pace yourself and keep an eye on deadlines for assignments, tests and criteria for posting.
