Poetry: Desire

by Scott Whitnall

Love You Can Never Know

It's crazy to think how someone can feel,

From the height of contentedness to the depth of unrest,

She should never know how deeply I feel,

For it would spoil the purest and tamest of doves.

It's funny how one night you can lay softly in bed,

Content, peacefully and easy,

The next, and for days on end restless, unhappy and unsure,

But you should never know how deeply I feel,

Because it would taint the most heavenly Eden.

It's amazing to know you're beauty and grace,

The honest innocence like that of the child,

It always drew me to you like the moth and the flame,

But you can't ever know how I feel.

What has grown to become my greatest friendship,

Is also my deepest heartache,

You make me smile just by looking at me the way you do so,

It makes me sad knowing I can never touch beyond the friendship and trust so fragile,

You shouldn't know how I feel,

It would crush me to lose everything of you.

It's entirely humbling that one person can change another,

Like the butterfly flapping its wings,

But when you are there, I'm a better person, I flourish,

When you are not, it's almost as if I wilt, tainted by society

And struggling without your presence, energy and vibrancy,

If only you could know how I felt,

Maybe you'd feel that same one day.

It would be a lit to say I'd never felt this way before,

But this is different, you bring an entire new dimension and meaning to my life,

You can make the birds sing, make my heart, dance,

It's a shame you can't know or understand how I feel.
