When it comes to ground covers, most people are familiar with the standard tried and true old favorites. They serve a purpose, whether it be to fill in empty spaces, to provide ground protection, or to add to the landscape design. Sometimes, however, there comes a time for change. Considering low growing plants that can work well as a substitute for ground covers is an ideal way to make that change.

When it comes to areas that may not be suited to flowers or plants, the challenge becomes greater. Then it is necessary to consider thinking outside the box, and that means considering different types of plants that wouldn't normally be used as ground covers. With a bit of thinking and a willingness to take a risk, the result can be a spectacular looking area that features an outstanding selection of flowers and plants that would never be a part of traditional landscape designs.

In the spring, the plants will produce very attractive, cup shaped, white flowers. This type of anemone is hardy from zone 4 through zone 8. Although it requires soil with proper drainage that has been amended with an abundance of organic matter, it doesn't require much else in the way of maintenance. The added bonus is that it is deer resistant.

SCARLET FLAME CARPET PHLOX ( PHLOX SUBULATA) -

This type of phlox is very attractive. It is perfectly suited to use as a ground cover because it only grows to about 2 to 6 inches in height, but it does spread quickly, and the
