Thinking about a career change because you are not satisfied with the job you have now is a great thing. It can be a very exciting time but it's also very scary. There are many things to take into consideration before making a career move. Make sure that you think them through well before you head into the unknown and unexpected.
Here are some of the things that you should consider before making a career change:
Money
This is probably the most obvious thing to look at. You must be sure that any career change comes with the same amount if not more than you already make. If it does not, make sure that you will still be able to meet your bills and other necessary things. If you cannot, you should wait for another opportunity to arise that will allow you to live comfortably.
Insurance
Health insurance is a major benefit when you work. It covers medical costs for things you may not be able to afford otherwise. It is important to look very carefully at the benefits you will be giving up as opposed to the benefits that you will pick up in the move. This isn't out of pocket money but accounts for a huge part of your salary.
Why Are You Making the Move
Be sure that the reasons that you want to change careers is valid. If it is simply because you are upset with your boss, this may be able to be worked out. If it because you are truly unhappy with where your career is, then you are making the right decision.
Longevity
Many companies look at how long an employee has been with their company to determine many things. It could mean giving up the advantage of having first pick for vacations or higher pay. It can mean taking the back seat to others who have been with your new choice for many years. There are many things that you benefit from when you have seniority.
Do You Know Enough
Does the career you want to move into mean that you will have to go back to school in order to achieve it? If so, there are many other things to consider. One of the main issues with that is how you will pay for the school. Other issues include your family. Will they be supportive of your efforts. Will you have enough time to spend with them. What are your long term family goals?
When Should You Quit Your Current Position?
You should never leave a current position until you have acquired another position. It can take a long time to find a job. This is especially true when you are looking for a new career in a specific field. Be prepared for a long wait and rejection as well. Most people don't land their dream jobs on the first try.
This is an adventurous time for you. Changing careers can be one of the best moves you will ever make. If you are in a career that you love, you will stick with it and be a much happier person. If you are happier, your family will be too.
