Obesity in children has grown to unimaginable proportions through the years. This is due to several factors that will inevitably have a major effect on the children when they get older.
When parents don' take the time to teach their children about a healthy lifestyle, they may inadvertently create a death trap for them. Parents have a great deal of influence in their children's lives. Children will follow in the patterns of their parents with many things. One of those thing is eating and exercise habits.
Some of the ways in which parents influence a child's obesity:
Snacking
If a child has unhealthy snacks laying around the house at all times, he/she will more than likely eat them. It is a parent's job to make sure that a child does not have unlimited snack food access. This is a huge influence on whether or not your child will become obese in the future. It may also be a clue as to why your child is overweight at this moment. Limit snacking to a specific time such as desert or as a special treat.
Don't allow your children to take endless trips to the kitchen for whatever they want. All it takes is to have them ask for permission to have a snack. You can then decide whether or not it is okay. You can also encourage fruits as a great way to snack. They are flavorful, sweet and healthy.
Healthy Foods
Just as making sure your child eats is important, making sure they eat healthy foods is just as important. It is not okay to feed your children endless supplies of fried foods. Eating at McDonald's every now and then is far different from eating there several times a week. In some cases, parents will do this several times a day. These types of foods are not healthy for children and shouldn't be used all the time. Again, this should be a special treat for children, not an every day thing.
Exercise
Parents need to keep the children away from the television and computer as much as possible. It is whether you allow it or not that can make all the difference in the world. Encourage outdoor play. Go for a walk with your children. Teach them the skills to become more active. Your children will have fun and will also be oblivious to the fact that they are doing something healthy.
Be a Good Example
Children can be told what to do a million times. If they see that their parents are doing something, they assume it is alright. You can influence your children's eating and exercise habits by simply doing them yourself. There is no need for children to become obese. Children will follow your lead so give them good leadership.
You influence your children every day. They watch you so that they know how to behave in the world. Obesity leads to many health problems later in life. It is not worth the risk. Make sure that your children are safe now and in the future from the detriments of obesity. Your influence as a parent can make all the difference.
