Memoirs: My great, true, personal garden story

by Judy Thompson

Created on: May 20, 2009   Last Updated: October 26, 2009

I had a plan to make a butterfly hummingbird garden. It was a special place to where I could go to and say healing prayers. As I prepared the place where I wanted my plants, my significant other went out to tiller the ground with his grandpa's old tiller. What a sound that came from the old machine. It tried and tried to turn over this red clay and it just couldn't hold it's own anymore. So I rushed to call the neighbor to bring his plow over, as I knew that in the end that if my significant other kept on he would break his grandpa's tiller. I knew that if he did that, I would never hear the end of it, as much as he loved that man. The neighbor came over and saved the day. He asked what we were going to plant and I told him some butterfly and hummingbird plants. He said, "Well, you need to plant something useful right now", as he feared that the plants I had wouldn't thrive like they needed to. He was correct. My butterfly bush died and wilted away as if it was just dust upon the ground. My other plants are barely hanging on and I never planted my grandmother's bulbs in fear that they, too, would not come up. Plus, it is best to plant the bulb taters in the fall. Now, as I was looking out the window and seeing the bare plowed ground. I decided to go get some seeds for corn and squash. I, also, purchased little tomato and bell pepper plants. I kept being told that nothing would ever live that I do not have a green thumb. So to set a point straight, I went out and planted the seeds and transplanted the tomato and bell pepper plants. I went around and layed down my tobacco in honor of Mother Earth letting me use her dirt for this garden project. I, also, went around for a second time saying prayers to the Creator to help me have a wonderful harvest and laid down my tobacco for respect to those prayers being heard. As of today, nothing else had died. I have little green sprigs of corn coming up out of Mother Earth. My yellow squash seeds have sprouted and have begun to grow. The tomato plants are thriving and full of life with little yellow blooms on them and the bell pepper plants are almost as tall as the tomato plants. I am so thankful that I have been blessed with this garden. After the harvest season is over with, I am going to try and do the same technique with my butterfly and hummingbird plants. As I have always loved the little winged ones and would love to share some time with them during my meditations and prayers. They are truly heavenly gifts from the Creator and always bring joy to my heart when they come around with their wonderful painted colors.
