Children should have chores that they do as a member of the household. These chores should be things that they do to learn responsibility towards home and family. This is an important part of your children's growth. It teaches them things that will last a lifetime.
There are other chores that children should have as well. Children should be able to earn a little money for the things that they want to have. Earning your own way in the world couldn't possibly be bad. Giving an allowance to children also alleviates "can I have" syndrome." Once your child has learned about earning his or her own money, you can teach him/her to use that money for what he/she wants instead of asking for a hand out from you.
Here are some of the reasons why you should pay your children to do some chores:
Pride
Earning something is a great way to encourage a child to take pride in his/her work, It shows him/her that if he/she does a good job, it pays off. There is nothing like the feeling of earning your own money. It makes you want to take pride in what you are doing. When you take pride in what you are doing, you do a better job.
Responsibility
Learning that you can earn your own money teaches a child responsibility. He/she has to perform the task in order to get the money. In order to do the job, you have to be responsible about doing it. Your child will soon become more and more responsible.
Work Ethics
Teaching a child to work for what they get in life teaches them a good work ethic. Far too many children grow up not realizing that it takes hard work and dedication in order to survive in the world. Good work ethics is one of the best gifts that you can give to your child.
Finances
This teaches children about finances. If they save their money, they can buy something bigger down the road. If they spend it all, there is nothing left until the next time that they get paid. There is no better way for a child to get the basics of finances than to handle the money themselves.
If you don't allow your children to handle money now, they may never be able to get a handle on financial situations. The younger children are when they learn, the more ingrained it will be in their minds.
Give your children a chance to touch money. Allow them to make mistakes with purchases so that they can learn not everything turns out the way you want them to. Give them the tools they need to get through life without major financial hardships. Teaching your children now will save them major headaches when they get older.
