The Keeshond is a beautiful dog originating from Germany and was formerly called Wolfsspitz for its close relation to other spitz breeds such as the Pomeranian. In the 1920's it would be officially changed to Keeshond in England. The Keeshond is usually around 17 to 18 inches tall and weighs in at 35 to 45 pounds. Keeshond have a thick double coat, with a thick ruff or what I like to call lions mane around their necks.

Males manes are usually thicker and more pronounced then female keeshonds. Most keeshonds are a mix of grey, black, silver, and cream color. It can range from lite to very dark, the keeshond should never be just one color.

The temperament of the loving keeshond is quite playful, they are fast learner and very eager to please their master. The Keeshond make amazing agility and obedience dogs. Many Keeshonds have been used in the role as guide dogs for blind and disabled, their lack of size limits them from being more popularly used in this role. They are great with children and are excellent family dogs, they prefer to be close to their owners whenever possible. Many have been referred to as their owner's shadow.

The Keeshond is known by their distinctive bark. Throughout the centuries they were very popular as watch dogs. They are quick to tell you when new visitors have arrived. Barking can become a big issue in the household if not properly trained.

When it comes to training for the beautiful keeshond, they are very bright and rank high in official working and obedience training. What many people don't understand is these dogs are not for an inexperienced trainer. Keeshonds need well structured environment and consistency. Most keeshonds develop behavioral problems due to lack of contact from their owners and lack of stimulation of activities. They often invent their own activities out of boredom which could possible become destructive. They would not be the right choice of breed for someone that wants just an outside watch dog.

I enjoy everyday with my keeshond and speak from experience when I say he is the best dog I've ever owned, he always knows how to keep a smile on my face and yes indeed I do call him my shadow. There are many sites to learn about this outstanding breed and learn from their amazing history. I love my keeshond and hope others find my article to be helpful in choosing a breed that is right for them and their families.
