Bouldering is a type of rock climbing that involves climbing short vertical (up to 7m) or horizontal routes. Bouldering takes place on the lower parts of real or artificial rock walls, bouldering caves, actual boulders and even on some buildings, walls, or other man made structures. The attraction to bouldering revolves around both it's difficulty and the simplicity of the equipment involved. Although a few items are optional, most experienced climbers use all of the following equipment to ensure a safe and enjoyable climb.
Rock Climbing Shoes- These are the most important piece of equipment for bouldering. While it is possible to use regular gym shoes, they will only provide enough grip for very basic climbs. Rock Climbing shoes have a sticky rubber sole that wraps around the entire bottom and side of the foot. Regular all around rock climbing shoes will work fine, but specific bouldering shoes provide the greatest amount of grip for this style of climbing. They have softer soles to enable a better feel and grip of the tiny crevices and edges often encountered in bouldering. They also will usually have an asymmetrical toe box which forces pressure onto the big toe, which is important for edging in bouldering. Lastly, the best bouldering shoes will be made of synthetic materials, which don't stretch as much and promote a much tighter fit as they break in.
Chalk Bag and Belt - Chalk is a very important substance that is used to increase grip. Chalk is actually magnesium carbonate, and helps eliminate sweat from forming on the hands. You can purchase it in loose form or in a fabric ball that dispenses it by squeezing it. You must also purchase a belt and chalk bag with a drawstring; be certain purchase a bag large enough for easy hand access and withdrawal. Groups of climbers can purchase a chalk pot, which is a large chalk container used by large groups of climbers.
Be aware that some areas don't allow chalk due to its environmental impact and unsightliness, while other areas require the use of chalk that has been dyed to match the rock color. Also, chalk build up over time can actually reduce the friction of the rock surface.
Crash Pad - A crash pad is a foam mat that is used to reduce the impact of a falling climber. It becomes more important during higher climbs or for climbs over a very hard or unforgiving surface. Prices vary based upon the size, thickness, and quality of the mat. They can cost anywhere between 70 and 500 dollars. Quality mats usually
