During this economic recession, it is critically important for families to keep their spirits up. When money was not such an issue, we could afford to eat out, go to the movies, sports arenas and such, and we gave little thought to the cost. Now, with job layoffs, rising costs in food and necessities, entertainment naturally becomes the last thing on our list.
We all need to be refreshed from the constant bombardment of the ever-worsening economy and its impact on our families. As it is, we will have to simplify our llifestyle. However, entertainment is just as important as it always was, to give us a change of pace and some relaxation and get our minds off our troubles temporarily.
Here are a few suggestions that cost little to no money and help promote family bonding too.
1. Instead of eating out, pack up a picnic lunch and head for the nearest park. Bring along a few kites, a ball and glove, a good book and enjoy conversation with one another. Take the time to enjoy the scenery. Sometimes we forget how blue the sky can be and how green the grass is, how flowers are beautiful. This is more refreshing than staring up at a theatre screen. Enjoying nature again is wonderful. Take off your shoes too and enjoy the grass under your feet.
2. Board games. Board games have been set aside and nearly forgotten in most homes. These create opportunities for conversations and pure fun as each one plays their best. Monopoly, Checkers, card games, Clue and old favorites provide tons of fun and laughs. Include jigsaw puzzles too. These are a fun distraction.
3. Bike riding as a family group. Biking together, as a whole family, is a great way to spend your time. If you do not have bikes, not to worry, go for family hikes. Almost everyone has access to walking/biking trails within an easy walk or drive.
4. No vacations this year. Create your own. Backyard camping costs very little in comparison. Kids love sleeping in tents, having spooky stories read to them. Parents can enjoy their own tent as well. Looking up at the stars together can be romantic.
5. Most public libraries offer free passes to local museums, zoos and places of interest. And, don't forget, reading free books makes for a nice quiet escape from the cares of the day.
6. This is a good time for the whole family to go through their belongings and separate what they no longer find useful. You will be surprised at the amount of things we can part with. Next, plan a family yard sale. Instead of spending money,
