Is the future of satellite TV in jeopardy? I would have to say a resounding yes. Why?
In my opinion, the internet is slowly replacing all television, satellite as well as cable and old-fashioned antenna. (Dial-up and cable internet will be replaced by fiber optics, in my opinion)
Satellite television, like satellite radio will fade into the distant sunset of our lives like 8-track tapes and the soon to become extinct, videotape.
There are hundreds and hundreds of internet radio stations online as well as the newer television viewing sites. Here are two examples that come to mind, Boxee and HULU. Both sites give you access to hundreds of television shows, movie trailers, music videos, television clips and shorts. But Boxee is more of a social media center with links for a variety of feeds, as well as pulling the content directly from your computer's hard drive. Youtube is another of the visual entertainment sites that may not offer entire television shows, but it does offer homemade, and independent shows. Whether you are looking for comedy or drama or how-to, you can find most anything on Youtube. You can watch what you want, when you want, where you want. I have built and installed a media PC and watch all of these on my living room television, complete with surround sound.
Some sites carry your favorite shows in their entirety that you can watch at your convenience. Sure, right now you can tape the show on the VCR or record it on the DVR, both offering the same convenience without the internet lag, but as time moves forward and bandwidth goes up, my opinion is that this will begin the demise of the satellite for television and radio.
As for the watching television anywhere aspect of this article, most cell phones now allow you to stream content right to the palm of your hand. Television, movies, and music, all through thin air over the internet. Sure, maybe right now it isn't the best or fastest technology, but give it time. Every year newer and faster cell phones are released that do more than ever before. How long will it be until you be able to unfold an LCD screen from your phone and have that as your entire entertainment system. That technology is closer than ever before, as screens get thinner and thinner. The internet is available almost everywhere now, some places offer faster bandwidth and speed than others. But with the advent of Wi-fi and Wi-Max, the internet may someday be available everywhere.
