Tips for creating a moving checklist

by Scott Clendaniel

Created on: May 19, 2009

Moving involves keeping track of dozens of important details. So why are your trying to keep track of all of them by yourself? Take advantage of this free checklist, and take some of the stress out of your next move! (NOTE: for more free tips and advice, please visit http://www.Movers-Edge.com).

Each task is assigned a Priority of either A (Critical) or B (Recommended), so you can focus on the things that matter most.

Focus on Priority A tasks first wherever possible, followed by B tasks.

Try setting a target date for each task in advance, allowing more than you think is absolutely necessary.

Track your progress every day, and adjust your schedule as necessary.

Delegate tasks to trustworthy family, friends and neighbors who are willing to help.

The Details

The Moving Checklist is organized to group tasks together to make things easier.

q

Set the date.

Mondays Thursdays are your best choices so that banks and offices are open in case you have a problem.

q

Arrange for utility transfers.

Notify current and future utility providers of your move date. Note when current security deposits will be refunded and how much is due when for the new ones. This includes:

q Cable/satellite television

q Cell phone service

q Electricity

q Gas

q Internet/ broadband

q Local phone service

q Long distance phone service

q Propane

q Recycling pick-up

q Sewer

q Security system

q Trash pick-up

q Water

NOTE: It's a good idea to schedule utility turn on dates at least one day prior to the move date and turn off dates at least one day after the move to allow for emergencies or issues that may arise.

q

File change of address.

At minimum, file a Temporary Change of Address with the U.S. Post Office to buy you time before you notify everyone else. You can file online at http://www.MoversGuide.com or call 1-800-ASK-USPS (1-800-275-8777) (both have a $1 fee), or go to the local Post Office and complete form PS 3575.

q

Make sure you have enough cash.

Most moving companies insist on being paid in cash before they unload a single box. Be sure have the correct amount with you with moving expenses, deposits, tips, and anything else you'll need on moving day.

B

q

Start a change of address log.

Create a change of address log by writing down who you receive mail from each day. Then contact those organizations with your change
