How to find a cheap apartment in New York City

If you're new to the Big Apple, then you should already know by now that there is a lot more to New York City than meets the eye. That is, you definitely don't want to feel yourself out in the big city without an experienced guide, or at least a knowledgeable resident. This article contains some basic information on where to start your quest for an apartment that suits you best.

First things first, take a moment to evaluate your situation- your purpose for being in New York City (business, aspirations, goals, etc.), available finances for renting, what type of environment would you be most comfortable living in, and when do you plan to move.

How do you picture your living arrangements?

Be realistic in visualizing how and where you plan to live in the city. The best strategy is to enlist the aid of an experienced real estate agent. Your agent would be able to assist you in whatever questions and concerns that you have in choosing an appropriate rental. In the beginning, your agent will ask you to fill out an application so that he/she can establish a relationship between you two. Usually, this application will consist mostly of financial information, as well as some background information. This will also help the agent to filter through the list of available rental properties that best suits your criteria profile. Once you've found your matches, this is where the real fun begins.

Remember, you must be assertive at all times and give careful thought and consideration into every option shown to you. Don't allow yourself to be bullied or pressured into making a quick decision, especially if you have slight doubts about saying yes to a particular property. You also can't afford to be too picky about your selections, so don't take more time than you need to consider a rental property (i.e. yes, no, maybe). If for any reason you feel that your agent isn't looking out for your best interest, keep in mind that real estate is a very competitive occupation, and there are thousands of others who would love to assist you in your search.

The most optimal time to begin your property search should be well ahead of the time that you have actually planned in moving to New York. All of your newer listings appear a few weeks before the beginning and middle of the month, so gas up the car and put on your most comfortable pair of walking shoes, because you've got a major decision to make before you make that final move to settle in.

Once you've found a property that you like, and are satisfied with the terms and conditions of the rental, your final thoughts should be on your agent's service fee. Normally, this would have already been agreed upon in the beginning when you filled out the agent performance contracts. If not, then you should definitely ask for clarification as in most cases the agent's fees are usually paid for in advance by the landlord of the property.
