Fashions That Fit
Finding Looks That Complement Your Body
Pants that ride up, sleeves that hang down, waists that pinch, hems that fall short, size 8s that fit differently from label to label. Did you think it was just your body that was impossible to fit?
According to Stores.org, $28 billion a year of merchandise is returned to stores because of poor fit. One study showed that 42% never find clothes to fit; 40% only sometimes; 14% said rarely and only 4% said always.
But you really don't care about statistics and projections: you already know that it's almost impossible to find great fit. There are, however, some tips you can use to help you find clothes that fit your frame.
First, try things on before you leave the store. It can be inconvenient, sure, but you're already there. It's easier than having to take things back.
Next, shop with a friend whose judgment you trust. Sometimes another set of eyes can help you determine whether something fits well or not.
Don't be afraid of sizes. A size 8 dress from one label may have the same dimensions as a size 12 in another brand. If the label really bothers you, then cut it out when you get home.
Similarly, don't try to squeeze into a garment that is too small just because you don't want to go up a size (or two). Clothes that are too small only accentuate problem areas of your body; you won't be fooling anyone but yourself.
Finally, look for clothes in forgiving fabrics and colors. Dark colors minimize, and so do fabrics that drape gracefully, as opposed to those that cling and bind.
