TV Show Reviews: Smallville, Season 8

Season 8 of Smallville has come to an end, and apparently so has the Doomsday storyline. It was a tale that had people pumped for an epic fight between Clark Kent and Doomsday, the only villain in the history of Superman to actually kill the Man of Steel. There was a battle between the two, all right. The problem was, after all the build up, all the hype, all the anticipation, and all the promises that the season finale would be full of twists and turns, the fight turned out to be much too short to be worthwhile.

This past season gave an interesting twist to the character of Doomsday: he had a human alter-ego named Davis Bloome, a paramedic working in Metropolis. He would suffer from blackouts, during which he would morph into Doomsday and commit murder and destruction, and awake without any memory of what had just happened. As the season progressed, Davis' origins were revealed: he was sent to Earth from Krypton at the same time as Clark in order to one day annihilate the man who would become Superman. Additionally, he attempted to try and control his inner beast by becoming a vigilante, but it did not do him any good for long.

There was only one person whom he felt could help him control his curse, and that was Chloe Sullivan. Fresh from her divorce from Jimmy Olsen, she realized that Davis was a monster, and tried to kill him with kryptonite, the same meteor rock that makes Clark feel weak. However, Davis survived the incident, as he was immortal as long as the beast within him lived. He then decided that he should stay with Chloe in order to keep the monster in check. Chloe agreed, but secretly did so to protect Clark from such a powerful creature.

All the while, fans were hoping to see an awesome fight in the season finale. Clark himself seemed hesitant towards it, for he did not believe in taking a life, and he felt that Davis had some good in him and was worth saving. After the Green Arrow obtained black kryptonite, which has the ability to separate a person's qualities, it was used to separate Davis and Doomsday. Now Clark would be free to stop the monster by burying him underground. As soon as he arrived to see Doomsday wreaking havoc once again, the battle was on...

...and in the blink of an eye, it was done. All that really happened was Clark saving a little girl, some punches here and there, and Clark taking Doomsday and smashing him into a generator, causing an explosion. All in the space of a minute or two. Yes, that is all it took for Clark
