A matter of life or death

The computer screen was flickering, my concentration wavering, and there was that voice again. I kept hearing a voice in my ear. This can't be so - but I had learnt from past experience to trust the voices because they seldom led me astray.

Mishka was calling me, "come home, come home".

Suddenly I felt panicked. A deep sinking feeling in my stomach. What had happened to her that she was calling me so urgently?

I sat at my desk looking out the window, then back at the computer screen reviewing the time. I looked out the window again and could no longer see, the tears were steaming down my face. I wiped my eyes and reapplied my make-up careful to ensure no-one saw what was happening. A small office, they ask questions and I didn't need to explain that I was hearing voices... they thought I was crazy enough as it was without this kind of justification.

I looked at the clock again. I could leave in half an hour. Would she be okay? Was it a life and death situation? Had she been in an accident and lying by the side of the road willing me to find her and take her home?

It was 11.45am. I couldn't wait any longer. I excused myself from work and left in a hurry, dropping my bag and phone as I went. Collecting my things and my thoughts I refocused on what I had to do. I raced home as fast as I could telling her to hang on and that I was on my way.

Was I over reacting? Was I being silly? Was I creating a fantasy in my head?

As I got closer to home I slowed down and viewed the streets for any evidence of an accident. Nothing, just traffic. As I pulled into the driveway I hoped I would be greeted at the door but this was not to be. Opening the front door, I called her name, "Mishka. Mishka. Where are you?"

I knew she often liked sitting out in the backyard enjoying the trees and sunshine and just contemplating life so that was my next step. Through the house and out the back door. We have a large yard so I called for her again, "Mishka, where are you?" With a sense of urgency I called again, "Mishka, Mishka".

There she was. She came bounding out of the bushes meowing at me like crazy and telling me a story about what she had been up to this morning. My sense of relief was immense. But wait, there was more. She told me she had had a lovely morning basking in the sun and enjoying the garden chasing a few butterflies that fluttered in our garden. The heat and activity had made her thirsty so she made her way over to the fish pond and there,
