four day weekend and she was rescuing it, but no, she opened the tub and to our surprise there were snails in the tub! (Four snails to be exact she was teaching the children about them in one of her lessons and forgot them at one school and needed to pick them up for her next class)
After an hour and a half she pulled off the main road and wound up towards the hills where she stopped under a large tree and said follow this road and you will see the trail head in about 5 minutes.
Our 10 kilo packs on our backs, our water jugs filled we waved her a good bye and headed up into the mountains.
The trail to Serra di fium'orbu took us into the forest of beech, pin and chestnut trees it was bursting with spring flowers, asphodel, cysts, vetch, cyclamen and buttercups just to name a few, there were even a few wild orchids which adorned our path.
We arrived a bit a head of schedule as our driver had driven us further along our route than we had thought, but no worries, we found a fantastic overlook to the sea under the shade of an old chestnut tree, a symphony of birds singing the to the sun as she gently went into her bed behind the Mediterranean horizon.
Our 2nd day from Serra di fium'orbu to Castastaghju was marked as a four hour hike though the mountains, we climbed and admired the views, listened to the quiet, appreciated our moment and wound our way through the woods to Mme Paoli's It took us a couple of hours longer than we thought because we all went soundly asleep after our noon time picnic in the forest.
Mme Paoli, a character, maintains a clean well run hostel, fed us Corsican soup, wild boar and many funny antidotes about Corsica with a fire burning in the fireplace and then sent us off to bed under the full May moon.
Castastaghju Cozzano our most difficult hike waited in the early morning light and left no room for hesitation. The path ran next to waterfalls and headed us up for a solid 4 hours bringing us to a height of 1500 meters. Amazing us with lush vivid greens and continued bird song (cuckoo's, tit's, woodpeckers) we met the challenge with less exchange of words and more stress on our climbing we huffed and puffed until the mountains reached the sky and we stood looking back to the sea on one side of Corsica and forward to our destination the sea on the other side of Corsica.
We plunged down the other side and after almost 10 hours found our way to the Auberge Afiletta in Cozzano a much needed shower and of course
