As most of us did, I grew up with the classic, what is now the classics, of Walt Disney and his animators. I still remember the day we took my brother to go see Bambi for the first time. When Thumper started thumping his foot, my brother just cackled. He did his best to imitate the sound and just laugh. That was Disney at its best.
As we grew older, those movies just didn't capture our attention the way they did when we were young. Oh yes, we made sure that our kids watched them and we sighed and laughed at the way the movies had been made, all those years ago. Memories, that is what Disney was best for. Making memories for the family and a lifetime. We still want that, for our families. But times have changed. Animation as has grown and become more complex, more upbeat, more....well, more.
Disney wants to us to recapture those memories we had as kids, so they try to give the kids that same simplicity, as well as touch of the new. It also seems that they are trying to recapture the adults. Some of the new movies released by Disney are wonderful for both kids and adults. Bedtimes Stories is a good example. I recently watched it with my daughter. It was wonderful and a movie that we will watch more than once. While I enjoy the cartoon type movies, I am at an age where I prefer a little more comedy, family style movie. I would rather see "real people" than cartoon ones. I can relate to them. I would also prefer to have my daughter know that there are real people as well as the cartoon ones. Fantasy is great, so is the imagination, but reality can be just as good. I think Disney is realizing that as well, and seems to be making more, human, family type movies than the cartoon ones.
As with any company, Disney has to adjust to the times, while they seem to be trying to maintain the family values that has always been there, they are throwing a little real life in as well. With the economy as it is currently, people want more value for their money. They are going to the theater less and buying or renting movies. While there are still some that prefer the blood and gore type movies, there are still those of us that prefer a good family style movie. So, I think that Disney is trying to adjust to the changes in the current world.
Everything changes and Disney is trying to grow and change with the rest of the world. There will always be the fantasy of the cartoons, the lives of those characters, yet, there is more available now than there was 20 years ago. There are more family oriented movies coming out from Disney. I like the changes that are coming from Disney. I can't wait to see more of them. I look forward to sharing this with my daughter and my grandchildren.
