When most people think of Halloween, "healthy" isn't one of the first words to mind. "Sugar", "candy" or "chocolate" might be, but a happy Halloween doesn't have to overload your body with unhealthy junk food.
Too much sugar can not only cause you to gain weight, but also suppresses your immune system, makes your energy levels fluctuate, can contribute to diabetes and heart disease, and causes hyperactivity.
Even sugar-free treats usually are laden with chemicals, too much packaging, and artificial sweeteners.
Some simple, delicious snacks that are healthier can keep your house a winner in the eyes of the neighborhood children and make you feel better, too.
TIPS
1. Change your chocolate
Dark chocolate squares still give you that taste of chocolate you're craving, with added antioxidants and healthy properties.
2. Size is everything
While it might not be as healthy as changing the type of snack, sometimes you just need that sweet treat. "Thin" or "snack-sized" versions of your favorite candy can give you the same taste for half the calories or less.
3. Homemade treats
You can dip candy apples, roast pumpkin seeds or soybeans, mix your own trail mix, or pop your own popcorn. While it's not a good idea to give these treats away unless it's a small neighborhood, this is a great snack for your household.
4. Party smart
Instead of potato chips and sugary foods, offer meat, cheese, vegetable or fruit trays to party guests.
SNACK ALTERNATIVES
Tasty treats don't have to be loaded with sugar. Here are some suggestions for Halloween treats that you can give away that won't earn you the reputation of "that house" from the kids. (You know, the one that gives away toothbrushes or dental floss or other "gross" stuff instead of candy!) You can also keep these treats in your own household for you or the kids to snack on around Halloween time, when the lure of unbalanced empty calories seems irresistible.
-Pretzels are salty and delicious, and healthier than candy
-Raisins are another popular alternative.
-Peanuts, nut mixes, or trail mix are also popular among the kids.
-For a unique snack, try packets of seaweed strips. Kids might balk at first, but they'll realize what a tasty alternative they are once they try them!
-Fruit leather sticks are sweet, but low in processed sugar and other additives.
-Real juice boxes (beware of the juice that just has fake flavoring) will quench kids' or adults' thirst, and also provide a little sweetness.
-Popcorn might not be as nutritional as real fruit, but it's certainly popular, and there are all sorts of different flavors available.
-The proof is in the pudding - pudding cups, that is. These are healthier than candy and definitely popular.
-Applesauce and fruit sauces are even healthier, and a great, filling snack too.
-Cheese sticks are great for lunches or quick snacks.
-Hot chocolate or spiced apple drink mix packets are unusual but popular too.
With a little planning in advance, you can avoid the processed sugar and unhealthy foods that many people are in the bad habit of eating or giving away... and the lineups for them at the grocery store, too. Your body will thank you!
