Treatments for constipation

We all experience the discomfort, and even pain of constipation throughout our lives; some people more than others. When our bowel movements become infrequent, and they are extremely hard and dry, and we have to strain in order to have a bowel movement, we know that something is wrong.

You judge the normality of frequency in relation to bowel movements by what works as normal for you, but when they are fewer than three (3) a week, that is definitely a danger sign. Constipation accompanied by lower abdominal pain or painful defecation is even worse; you definitely need to seek medical help at that point in time.

Constipation can be caused by a change of diet, dehydration, or a nutritional deficiency. There are a number of causes, but inadequate fluid and fiber in the diet, is by far the most frequent cause. Fruits and vegetables can be the first resort to rescue you from the condition. At the same time, you need to reduce low fiber foods from the diet. As a matter of fact, the treatments for constipation all relate to food and nutrition.

Here are some simple remedies which can give relief:

Try drinking a cup of hot coffee, hot tea or hot water in the morning. A cup of Quaker oats in the morning is a great start to a good bowel movement. Raisin bran is also a good option. Include fruits, vegetables, legumes, bran or other whole- grain cereals in your diet. Five servings of fruit and five of vegetables should be your goal. Drink at least six to eight glasses of water a day. Exercise - walk, dance or jog. These activities increase the bowel's activity level. Popcorn is not only meant to be eaten at the movies. Eating some popcorn daily, keeps bowel movement regular. Coca Cola is said to trigger muscular contraction in the intestines. A cup of Sun-Maid raisins is delicious, and helps with bowel movements.

Laxatives

Laxatives have always been used as a remedy. Try using a natural laxative of lemon and honey. Add four tablespoons of lemon juice to a cup of warm water and sweeten with honey. One to three tablespoons of olive oil also makes a mild laxative.

Some of the herbs form your garden can also be helpful when used as laxatives. Invest in basil and parsley. They are easily grown, so too are dandelion and feverfew. You can mix the leaves of these in an infusion, to relieve constipation.

If you suffer from chronic constipation, try revising your diet. Try to eat at least 30 grams of fiber daily, and it is guaranteed
