Change is a force all its own, not worrying about fallout or hurt, upset or frenzy, impact or destruction. It cannot be contained, rationalized, or quantified. It happens or it doesn't. Something gets moved, even an inch, it changes.
But the magnitude of a change has nothing to do with the change itself. The degree of difference rests in the mind of the person whose psyche is altered because of the change. A move across five states may have little impact on a person accustomed to moving. Yet, a college student who has been sitting in the front row of a classroom, suddenly forced to sit in the back, may have his or her entire world rapidly shaken. Each person has his or her own reasons for resisting change. Some simply become stagnate, often passing up opportunities for advancement because they know the environment will be different, with unfamiliar people. The twenty-five percent increase in pay is of little solace. However, some people have grounds to protest a shift in their lives.
Here is an example. Picture a huge warehouse-like building, filled with a massive amount of cubicles. The environment resembles a monotone maze, each cubicle the same shade of grey, no walls for privacy. Yet in the corner, near a window, a few lucky people are fortunate to have more space and are protected with privacy partitions. They have a better working environment because they are with a different department. These employees can look out of the window and see that there is life outside. Alas, their job is bright. But for the lowly rest of the staff, they are forced to pack into the remaining space. Then one morning, there is an announcement that the staff is merging and moving into a new building. The once cushy environment of the fortunate few is now gone, and the few employees who once had it made are now forced to mix in with the rest of the staff. There are crammed too, and their working environment is just as bleak. And, as a consequence, an employee quits the job and looks for employment elsewhere, simply because of the move. Is this petty?
It could be. The employee could simply be spoiled, having been accustomed to feeling superior to the rest. If this is the case, then that employee has a warped view of legitimate power, and is having a hard time dealing with the fact that he or she is just like the rest. So say good riddance, and hire a more grateful employee.
But, what if that employee has worked hard, above the rest, to receive some type of promotion, and that
