How to have a personal relationship with God

Think about the personal relationships you have here on earth. As with any relationship, it takes time and attention from both parties. How much time do you spend with that person? How often do you think of that person? Do you make sacrifices to have that personal relationship with them?

Relationships are give and take. There may be a friend or family member that you would like to have a personal relationship with, but if you or that other person do not spend much time cultivating that relationship, it will not be very strong.

We have many kinds of relationships with different people, coworkers, family, friends or people we meet in passing. Some of those are personal relationship and others are just acquaintances that not a lot of time or effort is put into that relationship. Your personal relationships are with those that know details about you and you know about them. You spend time with one another. You give attention to that relationship. It's not a problem if you have to sacrifice something in your life to nurture that relationship, because it goes both ways.

Just as with a personal relationship with another human, so is a personal relationship with God. He desires one-on-one time. He desires your attention. There are times you will have to make sacrifices to spend time with him. He has made the biggest sacrifice for you. John 3:16 says, (New Living Translation) For God so loved the world, that he gave His only Son, that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life. Romans 5:8 says, But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. God sacrificed his Son so that he could once again have a personal relationship with each of us.

But how can we as sinful humans beings have a relationship with a Holy God? Romans 3:23 says, For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. He knew we would be sinful but made a way for us to still have the opportunity to have a personal relationship with Him, if we so choose. Romans 3:22 says, We are made right in Gods sight when we trust in Jesus Christ to take away our sin. And we all can be saved in this same way, no matter who we are or what we have done.

God has made the way for you to have a personal relationship with Him. If you believe that you have sinned, and you believe that God sent his Son, Jesus to die for your sin and you're willing to turn from your sin and have made that decision to follow Christ, you are on your way to a personal relationship with God.

You will need to spend time with God. The Bible is Gods words. Read His word and find out how he wants you to live, how he wants you to act, how he wants you to bring others to Him. Pray. All prayer is, is spending time talking to God. Tell him what's on your heart. He wants to hear from you.

You will need to make sacrifices to read His word and spend time in prayer because life seems to get very busy and sometimes it will be hard to take that time for Him. But it will be worth it, because you are putting time and attention into that relationship, therefore it will grow and as your giving your time to Him, he will be blessing you and your life which in return makes for a very special, personal relationship with God.
