The key word in answering this category lies in the definition of 'foreign film.' The question is: foreign to whom? If you are not from the United States almost anything produced out of Hollywood would be considered foreign film to you; but inside The United States anything outside would be considered foreign; including Canadian film - although most Hollywood filming takes place in cities like Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal. I am going to write from the stance that Hollywood is the centre and anything out of The United States is considered foreign film; even though I myself am a Canadian. This leads me to answer the question: what is the best foreign films of 2009? Well a start is a Canadian horror film entitled Pontypool by Bruce McDonald. The film is simple, yet very enjoyable. It is about a zombie like virus that is communicated and spread through the spoken word that breaks out in a small local Ontario town. The movie carries a very witty phrase: shut up or die! And it takes place in a radio station. That's it. That's the set. A radio station - about a zombie attack outside of the radio station. Yet the movie is gripping and an edge of your seat nailbiter. The acting needs to be solid as well since the main actor, Stephen McHattie barely leaves the screen. He is the main character and he holds the movie together very tightly.
Another great foreign (Canadian) film of 2009 is that of Lee Demarbre's (creator of Harry Knuckles and Jesus Christ, Vampire Hunter) Smash Cut, due out in June 2009. The plot follows a great movie maker who looses his edge on making quality films; so decides to kill people in his films to make them more realistic and he becomes a smash hit again. The movie starts porn star Sasha Grey in her first non-pornographic roll. I'm not going to give away too many secrets about this movie; other than to say - look for it on Amazon over the next month or so because you won't regret it.
Speaking of Lee Demarbre and Zed Filmworks - be on the look out for his new film that just finished filming in Ottawa, Ontario and is due on around November or December of 2009: Stripped Naked. Starring Lyndon Ashby (or Mortal Kombat fame.)
I know I've focussed on Canadian horror films, because it's a genre that I personally love and I've given 3 great Canadian (foreign to Hollywood) films that came out/are coming out in 2009 that you won't want to miss!
