The power of speech is an ability that is easily taken for granted. In people who are able, speech occurs so effortlessly that there is rarely any consciousness of how deeply complex the functions are, that are carried out by the speech organs. Given the complexity of the way in which speech comes about, impairments related to speech are quite common. In particular, the impairment of stuttering affects one out of a hundred people in the general population.
Stuttering is debilitating speech impairment; it easily attracts the most unfair kinds of contempt and ridicule from people, and is socially crippling. People who have this affliction take up a lifelong goal of finding their way out of the woods. People try simplistic ways that only rarely work: trying to avoid using words that are recognized to exacerbate the problem, trying to slur words, or to mumble, trying to hide the problem, to stay away from social situations so much that one's friends and family can stop being aware of the existence of the problem, and so on.
Scientific understanding of the stuttering problem has made much progress in recent years; if one sets one's mind to it, there are methods of addressing the problem that take no more than a couple of years. The number of people today who have used these recent advances and have freed themselves from the tyranny of this impairment is encouraging. These methods do not involve medicine; instead they rely on determined self-discipline and scientifically-informed training. The key is self-motivation with any of these methods. New purpose-built speech therapy for stammering exists today that differentiates itself from traditional therapy for stammering.
Traditional speech remedies have always been run by highly-trained speech therapist that are in the field for their interest in the scientific challenge of it. They are not people who have ever experienced speech impairment at first hand; as thorough as their training and knowledge are, they work from a place where they have no real idea of the problems that the average person with speech impairment operates out of. The new methods place much importance on personal experience in a therapist, of the way in which speech impairments operate. The therapists, in these new courses, are people who have experienced stammering at first hand have found a way to overcome it.
Modern speech impediment courses are usually held not as a group class, but as a personalized class. As time goes by prospects only improve for people who dream of overcoming a frustrating and embarrassing personal speech problem. Things have progressed so well that any person who struggles with such a problem is never asked to put up with simplistic advice such as to just enunciate carefully or to merely deal with it.
