I am an adult who suffers from ADHD. I have struggled with it all of my life. Learning seems to be a difficult task for either a child or an adult with ADHD. The truth is that we are thinking faster than the average person is and are therefore harder to keep on track. In all actuality, learning becomes difficult because we think that the content and or structure is boring. We become easily disinterested as a result. This is the crux of the situation but certainly not the end. There are solutions available to you and your child.
ADHD is one of the most commonly misdiagnosed disorders. Many children with other psychological disorders are regularly diagnosed with ADHD and likewise prescribed with Ritalin, which has dire side effects for those who do not actually have ADHD. Children who have ADHD tend to respond well to a combination of behavioral modification and prescription medication. The first thing that happens under medication is that your children will sleep through the night and thus be better equipped to make reasonable decisions. The second thing is you will notice a focus that seemed absent before. Behavioral modification is still necessary and you will be required to remain proactive in your child's education.
There are several options that you will have to help engage your child during their educational process. First, ensure that they are seated in the front of the classroom. Second, encourage them to become engaged in asking on topic questions. This will aid in keeping them interested. Give them tasks that they can complete in increments. Be aware that they are in fact very create more so than most other children they only need to be redirected from time to time. Learn to utilize their particular talents to vest them further within the projects they are required to complete.
I have had the benefit of living with ADHD while on a prescription and living with out medication. I have come to a personal conclusion that people adapt to the environment that they live in. I have become accustomed to dealing with my disability on my terms. I have learned to utilize the beneficial factors of ADHD to my advantage. Being capable of thinking so far in advance allows me to function in a fast-paced environment because I never become bored. I am capable of coming up with ideas and solutions which are both creative and functional. I can work harder and longer because I have a need to have something to do.
I spent many years on the dishonor role as trudged through my adolescent years but in later life I was an exceptional student. I learned to utilize my strengths to become successful member of society. In fact, I did so well as an adult I was second in my class and graduated Magna Cum Laude. All you parents that are seeking answers you just need to spend the time with your child and help them to adapt on their terms. I can not promise you an easy ride but if you are proactive your child will be able to live a successful prosperous life.
