Best shows on television

by Kelly Linman

If they film it, I will watch it. I am in love with television; it takes me to places that I can't go in my everyday life. I am willing to watch any show at least once to see what the hype is about. These are th shows that consistently hold my attention, even as new shows have arrive on the scene.

1. "Survivor" is, and will always be, the only show that has I have watched from the beginning of the series. In the nearly 10 years that it has been on the air, I have only missed a handful of episodes. The show has managed to stick to its original format while looking for ways to invigorate it. As a pioneer of today's competition reality shows, it still stands up as the best. It has stuck to its original formula, stranding 16-20 strangers in the middle of nowhere. They must "outwit, outplay, outlast" one another in the hopes of winning one million dollars. "Survivor" has given us some of the most despicable and greatest moments in reality TV, such as the infamous "dead grandmother." The contestants are always interesting, conflict is always present, and Jeff Probst (the greatest host on television) has been there throughout the entire Survivor journey, ready and willing to point out each tribe's strengths and weaknesses. You can always find at least one contestant to root for and against. The show knows what works and uses it to its advantage.

2. Mike Rowe is my hero. "Dirty Jobs" has given me new appreciation for "the men and women who make civilized life possible for the rest of us." Thank goodness there are people out there willing to do the jobs that make me gag. Rowe makes the viewer feel like they are truly there. I never realized that there were so many dirty and disgusting jobs out there, and I appreciate anyone willing to do them. Rowe makes the show entertaining and injects humor into smelly situations.

3. The other day, my husband has asked me why I am fascinated by "Deadliest Catch." I could spend all day watching this show, because the men on it captivate me. They put their life at risk for "red gold," or Alaskan king crab and sometimes make more money in a week than many make in an entire year. I enjoy watching the captains interact with their crew, the deckhands interacting with each other, and the arguments, triumphs and disappointments. No matter what, the men of "Deadliest Catch" offer entertainment during their crabbing seasons.

4. I may change my mind about my next pick; it will depend on how the show will tie together in the end. I was intrigued when I started hearing the chant "one by one" on CBS advertising the show "Harper's Island." "Harper's Island" tells the story of a wedding party who travel to the show's namesake to partake in what should be a joyous occasion. Within minutes of the first episode, the first death occurs, and in each subsequent episode at least one of the wedding party loses their life. Is it a crazed member of the wedding party or is it a known murderer? The show twists and turns, and there are clues in every episode. I am very interested to see how the miniseries turns out in the end, and I hope to not be disappointed.
