Things to do in Elmira, NY, during the fall

Elmira is a small city located in western upstate, NY. Close to Corning and Ithaca, it sits on the Chemung River, nestled within gorgeous hills in the Chemung valley. Autumn is one of the best times of year to visit Elmira. The weather is cool, and the foliage is amazing. If in town, be sure to visit some of Elmira's attractions.

Harris Hill Amusement Park, located at 557 Harris Hill Road, is an action-packed destination for the entire family. Open every day throughout the summer, until the end of September, Harris Hill offers a number of activities, as well as a picnic area and public pool. There are batting cages, kiddie rides, go-karts, an arcade, a driving range, and of course - miniature golf. If you are feeling especially adventurous, $80 will buy you twenty minutes on a glider plane. Visit the National Soaring Museum at the top of the hill, while you're waiting for your ride. A glider plane is pulled by another plane - there is no motor, and no pilot!. Just you gliding over the breathtaking scenery below.

Another way to enjoy the beautiful fall leaves is to go for a hike at Tanglewood Nature Center. Located at 449 Coleman Avenue, Tanglewood has a series of trails through woods, meadows, and around two ponds. The trails are not difficult, so again, this is an activity for the whole family. Tanglewood also has a Nature Museum, which is a great place to follow up on your hike and learn about the wildlife you just witnessed.

The Clemens Center is the region's premier performing arts center. Be sure to check out their schedule when in town for something to do in the evening. There is always an interesting show, from Broadway performances, to music concerts, to family shows. The Clemens Center was recently renovated.

Elmira is the location of Mark Twain's summer home. Twain, whose real name is Samuel Clemens, wrote many of his popular works in his family's Elmira home. The estate is now owned by Elmira College, and houses Mark Twain scholars. You can visit the home and ground at 1 Park Place, Elmira, NY.

Elmira is a quaint city. Even just walking downtown, visiting the shops and grabbing a cup of coffee can be enjoyable. On Thursdays, through the end of September, head over to Wisner Park for the Wisner Market. There you'll find craft vendors, local produce, candles, and art. Then drive up to the Hill Top Inn for dinner with a view, located at 171 Jerusalem Road. Something not to be missed in Elmira in the fall.
