When does PETA go too far?

by James Kellard

Created on: May 16, 2009

The organization PETA consistently goes too far in their attempt to "help" animals. Their disgusting tactics poison the publics opinion of animal activists in general. Personally I am an enormous lover of animals, but I still wear sneakers, eat meat, and have pets (who are treated better than most people). PETA attempts to make it seem as if any true lover of animals must be a vegan and wear clothes made of wheat, in my opinion this is entirely false.

Looking to the animal kingdom, which PETA apparently loves so much, we will see that thousands of animals rely on other animals as a food source. It is the circle of life, some animals eat only meat, others eat only plant life, many eat both. Humans are omnivores, meaning that we eat, well...everything. It is not a choice but a biological fact, our bodies are made to eat both meat and plants. This is not to say there is anything wrong with vegetarians or vegans. If people choose to eliminate all meat and animal products from their diet that is great for them, but as with any other belief or life choice they should not try to push these beliefs on others.

Eating meat is something humans have done for as long as we have been in existence. We should not condemn those who continue to do so. Should animals be tortured and treated inhumanely before being killed for food? No of course not. There are ways it can be done humanely and these should be applauded not vilified. An example would be Kobe beef in Japan. The cows used for Kobe beef are allowed to live out there lives unrestricted, grazing openly, even getting massages. After they live a fairly privileged life they are then slaughtered for food. Granted this is not something most of us would want to see or think about, but it is the circle of life. Even though these cows are going to be used for food they are still treated very humanely for their entire lives. Ironically, Kobe beef is also supposed to be one of the best tasting and most expensive beefs in the world.

Using and wearing leather, if one truly thinks about it is actually a good thing. Rather than wasting the skin from the animals we are eating, we use them to make clothing therefore wasting as little of the animal as possible.

Wearing fur is a bit different. By no means is owning a fur coat a necessity. One way in which PETA has demonstrated this is to throw red paint and destroy fur wear. What has this accomplished? Well the fur coat that originally would have been worn, probably for many years,
