While each year television companies continue to spin out more and more vile garbage into our televisions and into our brains only one new television show for the 2008-2009 series has actually captured my attention and held it. That is the series of Harper's Island. A whodunit horror murder mystery premiering on Global Thursday nights. The series goes on for 13 weeks as 13 guests at a wedding party on an island are killed off one by one. It sounds like your typical slasher movie made into a very long television series; however it is much more than that - as we don't know if the killer is man (met or not met so far) or spiritual - as there seems to be a huge supernatural presence going around, particularly in the possession of a little girl, who is supposed to be the flower girl.
Even despite the horror plot there is still a great romantic plot laid down throughout the series that at times you forget you are watching a horror show and believe you are just watching a drama. It has its laughs, and its tears. It is a great show to follow...and as we have not had many horror television series in the past decade or so, it's a breath of fresh air. We're getting tired of the cops dramas, or the medical dramas, or the stupid spin-off comedies (ie. Parks and Recreation). This is something we haven't seen in a long time. It's catching our attentions and it has us wanting more.
Another cool thing is that all of the actors are believable and realistic. Each has their own motives for killing each other off; and some who don't have any motive at all are the scariest because their characters seem just like the type that would get some sadistic pleasure out of cutting off a deer's head and sticking it in your bath tub. Being filmed in and around British Columbia with a bunch of Canadian actors is also really cool - because we all know that Canadian actors are much more believable and better at the art of acting. It's also great to check out some homegrown talent being so widely and publicly recognized throughout Hollywood. It's exciting to see what will happen with the series after this season is finished and how/if they might pick it up for a second one.
Once again I just want to emphasize how cool it is that the plot is so twisted and so well written that those who are killed off are never even missed by the other wedding guests, and for the most part people don't even know that there is a serial killer on the loose. It's a really cool thought and idea and it is being executed flawlessly. I believe that it is a must see for all who are true horror movie fans.
Check it out. Harper's Island! 10 PM Thursday night on Global TV.
