Selling Arts and Crafts
Crafters want to sell their wares and possible launch a small business, but the products need to be out in the mainstream rather than amongst other arts and crafts. There are many ways that a crafter can do this. You need to keep the person wondering how many people you have working for you. It does not matter that it is only yourself if you present a professional looking product.
At Home
Look around your town for the little shops or independent stores and if they have a few other stores in there small chain that is even better. Ask to sell your items at the store for a percentage. Stop in at upscale galleries and ask for showing space. Craft malls were fashionable a few years ago, but shoppers viewed these as year around craft shows. You want shoppers to view your products as high-end decor, stationary or apparel. They accept this point of view if they see the items with commercially produced items or when offered as custom design.
You might ask the companies in which you do business whether or not you can have a few items on display. Your gas station/convenience store might offer you a few inches of display space if you promise to maintain the space and you make sure they receive your personal business. Who provides your insurance? Maybe as a stationary designer, you can design a personally designed stationary for them if they are willing to display your work for them. There are many ways we can help each other. There are many options and your business can move out from your town so you must be willing to carry your business with you.
Out of Town
When you go out of town, consider taking a portfolio of your work and a starter marketing pack of wares. If you see a store similar to what you use it your town, stop in and ask the manager. If you have results from your local market and maybe even a letter or two of recommendation, you might move your market outside of your town. Just think about it that you now have to go where you vacationed for business. Now business and play coexist. The hope is that you will not need to look further because they will come to you, but do not let any other options fade.
Established Business
Now that you have facts on the popularity of your crafts, you can approach established businesses with you sales figures and ask to become a provider. Who knows your craft become a staple in one of the major chains or even on one of the shopping channels.
Spend the time sitting in hot weather showing your wares or market your product in the means of major business. One worker knows may create a business that requires the hands of many.
