Oh those pesky cars, they are so needy! They need to get oil changed, and they need to have parts repaired, and replaced every 39,000 miles. On top of the maintainenance costs we have to put gas in them every few hundred miles as well. Depending on what kind of car you have, the amount that you spend on gas can be quite tolerable, or it can make you cringe every time you put gas into your car. With the gas prices being what they are today, it can be a hassle to keep your tank full, and have enough gas to go to work.
Gas prices finally dropped from over four dollars a gallon, to just under two dollars a gallon, and all it took was a global recession. Now that we are finally starting to dig our way out of the recession, gas prices are starting to creep up again. Where it was the norm to see prices around $1.80 a gallon in Rochester, NY, it is now creeping back up to around $2.40 a gallon, and it probably will go up even higher over the summer.
I don't think we really will ever learn how to live without gas. I really do look forward to the day when we run out of oil, and the world can finally rid itself of all the wars, and political talking points that come with it. I have come to accept that until we run out of oil, that we are never going to be free of the influence of countries like Saudi Arabia, and others who have oil.
That is really my biggest gripe with the cost of gas about to go back up again. I can learn to not drive so much, I live close enough to my job, and if I had too I could just write all day. I have a park close by that I could play frisbee, or go sledding in the winter time. I wouldn't be bored, or cooped in the house all day if I didn't want to be because of not wanting to drive somewhere. I would just be more upset that we are helping the economies of countries that don't deserve it.
Gas prices will never again be below two dollars a gallon, and I have accepted that fact. There simply isn't enough oil anymore to sell cheaply. Even if there was, OPEC would just find ways to manipulate the prices upward. The supply and demand equation just doesn't work in our favor when it comes to oil. They have the oil, and we can't live without it. So prices will stay really high until we figure out a new souce of energy.
The price of oil isn't a big deal anymore. I think we have gotten past the shock of expensive gas, and we can deal with it better. Oil won't be around forever, and so one day we will have to find some sort of cheap energy source. I have a feeling that it will happen the day after we run out of gas, but I don't think it will be mass produced until oil is no longer profitable.
