How can you be successful in looking for a job? There are a few key traits that distinguish the people who can find a job, and those who are forever looking through the want ads for a new position. What does it take to find a job? You have to be smart about looking for a job, and you have to understand what you are going up against in order to find a job in this market.
The first key to finding a job is to have a good attitude, and a sense of realism. You have to know what you offer to the job market, and plan your search accordingly. If you have experience in the retail sector, don't get your hopes up for that job as a research scientist. If you have a college degree you can expect to earn more, or at least open more doors for yourself. If you only graduated from high school, you should expect to aim low if you are lacking experience.
When you get an interview, make sure that you are prepared for it. Wear the proper attire, and make sure that you are ready to answer the questions, and showcase your experience. There is nothing that will hinder your job chances then blowing the interview. If you don't have a good interview, the employer isn't going to hire you, and you might as well have not showed up in the first place. As odd as it sounds, an employer is going to place a lot of weight on how you answer questions, and how you dress, so be ready.
If you get an interview, but don't get the job, make sure you do a good follow-up. A thank you letter shows that you are truly sorry that you didn't get the job. It says that you are a professional even in adversity, and that you really want to work there should anything happen. If the person that gets hired doesn't work out, you might get a call from that company later on with a job offer because you took the time to express some gratitude.
Above all though is to just be a professional through and through. Learn from your mistakes when you don't get jobs, and always ask for feedback if available. It will help you get better at searching for jobs, and having more effective interviews. Make sure to analyze your resume to see what jobs you can be the most useful in, and the ones you are most likely to get. Don't sell yourself short, but don't go for jobs that you obviously aren't a fit for.
If you want to get a job, just keep trying until you get one. Search for as many jobs that would fit your skill set, and go after them. Don't settle for anything that you don't want, but make sure that you have something that will be a good fit for you. Be a professional about the process, and understand what you are going for. The ones who don't get jobs are the ones who don't have a clue about what they are really looking for.
