Twitter has provided a way for busy bloggers to get the word out that their blog exists and that they have something new on it for people to see. Here are some of the ways you can promote your blog on Twitter:
1. Be sure to list your blog in your profile on Twitter. When you sign up for Twitter and setup your profile page, you'll want to make sure you pay attention to promoting your blog in your brief bio. Tell what your blog is about to gain the interest of followers and put the address of your blog in the space that asks for "more Info url." That way the address of your blog will appear on your profile page on Twitter. When followers click on it, they will be taken to your blog. Once you start gaining followers, you should see an increase of those landing on your blog.
2. Be sure your tweets set a good example of what your followers will find on your blog. In addition to being interesting and of importance to your followers in some way, your tweets should also set a tone that matches your blog. If your blog is a serious one, you will want to set a more professional tone on Twitter. If your blog is more humorous, you will want to give a more humorous and snappy tone to your tweets.
3. Vary your tweets. Make some of them informative, some should be questions for others, some can lead directly to your blog, some should lead to blogs you find particularly interesting and some can be announcements. The point is to make them interesting by varying the format and intent of the tweets. Another point is to not make them all a hard sell to get people to your blog. If the main purpose of your blog is to sell something, make your blog entries about that and about other things as well. Just like your tweets need to be interesting and valuable to your readers, your blog too needs to be interesting and valuable to your readers. If all you have on our blog is a sales pitch, the followers you gain through Twitter will be very brief.
4. In order to write great tweets it might be helpful to study the tweets of others with big followings. Look through those you are following on Twitter and take a look specifically at those who have big followings. Do you see any common thread? Try some of their techniques to improve your tweets.
5. Another way to increase those who are following you on Twitter is to put one of the keywords common on your blog into the Find Someone search on Twitter. Those who have one of your keywords in their name might be someone who would be interested in your blog. Start following them and they will probably at least check you out.
6. Another way to promote your blog on Twitter is to give a discount or a prize to those who sign on to follow you. Give them a code in your tweet and for those who sign on to follow you the discount code will be honored at your blog.
The ways to use Twitter to promote your blog are only limited by your imagination. Try new things and remember that your tweets are only up for a couple of minutes. Tweet again a bit later for emphasis.
