Twitter is the new myspace of the Internet without the hassle of worrying that your future boss or college professor can view that drunk, slightly nude picture from New Year's Day. It enables the avid web user to commit only the briefest of seconds to a whole site and still remain part of the inner sanctum. The showstopper that is Beyonce Knowles has been rumored to follow Twitter religiously, up heaving millions of fans and sending them scrambling for their own page to keep up.
The real question that remains is whether or not Beyonce herself actually uses Twitter. A brief search of the site found pages upon pages with various Beyonce references or shrines, but no Beyonce in person. She was quoted as saying the only way she can reach her sister, Solange, is to catch her on Twitter; even cousins of hers supposedly must make Twitter cameos to reach her. Is this an elaborate but effective way to increase popularity for both Twitter followers and Beyonce fans alike?
The premise of Twitter is to create a simple page with your name, a brief sentence you chose to describe yourself, life, or interests, and then update accordingly to whatever you happen to be doing or thinking at various moments. Die hard Twitters can be seen posting minute by minute updates of thoughts, twitches, even-shudder- bowel movements. It makes sense for celebrities to get involved and fans to be equally as enthused to catch updates on their favorite stars lives in real time as it happens.
The inevitable trouble with this situation, of course, is equvilent to a fan sending a letter to a favorite actor or musician. The letter starts with a heartfelt person dligently writing a supportive letter, hoping to ilicit a real response. The letter is then trickled down through the chain of command, never reaching the star intended, and instead read by either a lowly paid assisstant's assitant or a computer generated auto reader then thrown into the recycling bin.
Celebrities like Beyonce may very well be active on Twitter, updating their minute by minute accounts of their daily lives. More often than not, though, disappointment will come to those who spend their time sifting through the mounds of fan sites designed to impersonate your beloved star. So, enjoy sites like Twitter not for the promise of a glimpse into a star's life, but for the peace and relaxation of a site that allows stimulation and growth in a social atmosphere. After all, if Beyonce uses Twitter, shouldn't you?
