In order for any romantic relationship to work both parties must maintain their individuality. This means having their own interest as well as their own circle of friends outside the romantic relationship. If this is not preserved eventually one partner will feel trapped and ultimately this will do damage to the relationship. Furthermore you should never be trying to hold onto a person, they should willingly be staying by your side out of love and appreciation not obligation. In reality your only obligated to two people in your life. Your obligated to the creator of the universe because without that individual you would not exist. You are further obligated to yourself because you are not good to yourself no one else will see the need to be either. If you are sure of yourself and secure in who you are, you'll realize that you are capable of having any level of a successful relationship without forcing someone to stay with you.
True love is unconditional acceptance, therefore it is necessary to be able to accept yourself before you enter any romantic relationship. When you are capable of fully accepting yourself with even your flaws, then you will be able to completely love another person. Love does not force anyone to do anything that they are not comfortable with. Furthermore, love would encourage someone to remain true to themselves while becoming committed to the development and maintenance of a romantic relationship. Manipulation is not a successful way to maintain a romantic relationship. Ultimately manipulation of another person might control them for the short-term but the relationship will not survive the long haul.
The evolution of relationship will certainly have some difficulty. That is because we are to become one with others through a natural blending of our personalities and desires. This is not happen overnight and requires commitment and constant communication between the members of a couple. Trying to control a relationship is very complicated and eventually will become more work then is worth it or necessary. It is more important than we except the challenges of a relationship and we meet them face-to-face and except that they are part of making the relationship grow. If we're willing to do this then we can develop a relationship that is natural in practice thereby creating a lower likelihood of our partner becoming so frustrated that they leave the relationship to find companionship elsewhere.
