Good Morning David
The early morning sun broke through the kitchen window. The rays highlighted specs of blue on the otherwise white ceramic tile counter top. The counter top reflected the blue of the tile floor, which complemented the painting technique on the walls, which brought the beauty of the window treatments. At let that's what Claudia had said when she decorated the room. She had picked everything out and David had hung it, applied it, installed it, and assembled it. He hadn't cared what the kitchen looked like; to him it had just been a place to eat.
This morning, like every morning for the past year, David was cooking. He stood in front of the stove with a spatula in his hand. He eyed the pancakes for bubbles, rotated the sausage links, and peppered the eggs. He glanced at his beat up old watch, ten minutes until the kids would be down. After flipping the eggs and the pancakes, he set the table. . A small plate for Amelia, seventeen and watching her figure, a big plate for his thirteen-year-old, Sean and a plastic bowl for his little five-year old, Jordan. Lastly, he set out a big plate for himself.
They were good kids who'd been through a lot. Claudia had left a little over a year ago. At first it was horrible, everyone walked around in a constant state of shock, except Jordan who was too young to really understand. The family was barely functioning. David had decided that they should go to counseling. He along with the kids needed to learn how to live with Claudia. It took time but they got through the sadness and guilt and began living again.
David heard the familiar sound of Amelia's black boots clopping against the kitchen floor as he brought breakfast over to the table.
"Good morning sweetheart" He said looking over at her.
Her red hair was tied back in French braided pigtails. She was wearing blue jeans and tight red t-shirt that said Bad Girl in fake rhinestones.
"Can't you wear a shirt that says Good Girl?" David asked half joking.
She sighed and rolled her eyes " What kind of statement would that make?"
She sat down at the table and began filling her plate. David ran his finger through his thinning black hair.
"That you're good." He replied
As she drizzled low fat syrup on her pancake, Sean walked in. He looked like David. He had the same smokey grey eyes, dark hair, and charming smile.
