When starting a home business is a bad idea

You just got laid off from work. You have always had a plan that you would someday start your own business out of your home. Now is your chance, or is it? There are some cases where it's a bad idea to start a home business. Let's look at a few of them.

It takes time to start making money

If you have no other source of income, you need to remember that any new business takes a while to make money. When you are starting a business, home base or other kind, you have to put money into setting it up, getting the office services such as telephone and internet access in place, marketing, and not to mention anything needed to produce your products (machinery, materials, etc). If you don't have another source of income supporting you during this time, or a large nest egg you will find that you have problem paying your rent and other bills. To avoid this problem, before you start a home based business that will be your main source of income, save up 6 months of your living expenses plus the costs you expect for setting up the business. Then you will not have to worry about the heat getting turned off on you during a meeting with a customer.

You need a quiet place to get things done

You will need a place in your home that is away from the hustle and bustle of family life. You need a place where you can set up an office or workspace without distractions or interruptions. Honestly, no matter how important you think everything else is your best friend will be your door. If you have a door to your work area that you can shut when you are working, you will be astounded how much more work you will get done. If you don't have a quiet place like this, you will constantly be fighting to concentrate on your work. That can easily lead to your business failing.

Your family needs to support you

A home based business shares a roof with a family. This means kids running around in their underwear, teenagers breaking down over BF or GF issues, and dirty laundry that seemingly walks around by itself. If you don't have the support of your other family members when you are starting a home based business, they will end up sabotaging your blossoming business. Consider that you just started a meeting with a client, and you can't get anything done due to interruptions. Will your client still be patient after the 10th interruption in 30 minutes? Not likely.

You need a stable address

One of the worst things for a new business is to change addresses just when you are getting started. This is the same for a home based business. Customers are confused where you are, and even why you are moving. There are negative associations with companies that move around, and you just can't get around them. This is all on top of the whole problem of packing up your business, moving it and your home to the new location and unpacking everything. Even if you can find the proper boxes again, the time you spend on the move is time you spend away from your business. It would be much better to wait until you are at your new home and unpacked before starting your home business.

Summary

While starting a home based business can be one of the most rewarding and successful things you do, there are times when you should not start such a business. If you do start it in these situations, you will have a very hard uphill climb to make your business a success. That said if you do succeed at your home based business, the success is that much sweeter.
