American Idol success and questionable talent: the case of William Hung

The concept of searching for an American Idol is good. What better way to find hidden talent than to search for those who can't seem to get a foot in the door of the music industry. Find a hidden star and send them on their way to the top, part of the American Dream.

The first three to four season auditions were funny. I laughed my head off at some of the antics. I still laugh watching it now. But now, I really wonder why do so many show up, knowing they can't sing? Why show up and be told you're no good, or that stinks. Didn't their family for friends tell them "that wouldn't be a good idea." And why continue to sing, when randy starts to laugh, Simon tilts his head back and Paula looks down. You should know right then, you are not getting a "Yes dog! welcome to Hollywood!"

I think most show up to be on T.V. I then think some are waiting for the show to air, so they can kick back with their friends and family to laugh at themselves. I'm not saying all are doing it, but I imagine some are.

I think they should not allow anyone to audition if they show up in a costume. That should be the first clue that the audition isn't going to be good and more importantly, a waste of time for the judges. Sure it makes for good T.V. and people tune it to see the weird stuff. But come on, they are looking for an idol, not a circus act or side show. Wasn't there a show for that?....America's Got Talent?
