Tips for Internet freelancers

Establishing yourself as a freelancer on the Internet takes a bit of work but it follows a natural course of setting up a business and developing and implementing a marketing plan. Here are some tips for Internet freelancers.

1. Develop a plan for presenting yourself and your business on the Internet. Being a freelancer means you work for yourself, so you make up the rules. In developing your plan, determine when and where you will work first. Draw up a schedule for yourself, so that you will stick with the task and will make progress naturally in your business. Often we think that being an Internet freelancer will be a breeze. In one sense it is because you will be doing exactly what you want. What some people don't realize is that it usually takes up more time than a regular job.

2. Develop the Internet vehicle for your business. If you are selling tangible items, you will need to set up a shop on line, complete with a shopping cart system, pictures of your merchandise, and payment methods that will be suitable for your customers.

3. If you are a freelancer providing a service, you can do so by email and send an invoice by email when the work is completed. Examples of service-type freelancers are freelance writers and editors. For example, when clients work with freelance editors, they send their writing to the editor via email. The editor completes the work, sends it back with suggested corrections and changes, then sends an invoice for the work. There is no need for a shopping cart or fancy submission system here. All you need is email and a word processing program. If the client prints out the invoice and mails you a check, you don't even have to install PayPal or any other type of payment system.

4. Internet marketing for your business can be considerably cheaper than marketing through the mail. You won't have postage to deal with, but you may have the minimal cost of using an on-line mail service. The reason you may want to use an on-line mail service is that when you send out too many email notices from your personal mailbox, many of them will end up in people's spam rather than in their in-box. Some of the mail services will even allow you to write notices ahead and set a time for them to send them out.

The point of marketing on the Internet is to pass information along to your customers rather than to send them ads that are all too easy to delete without reading. By adding a blog to your website, you can create interest for your business by posting interesting and entertaining entries.

5. Once you get your blog up and going a bit, it's time to begin using Twitter to help you drive traffic to your blog. By giving potential customers an opportunity to read about you, they will get to know you and your business and want feel more comfortable using your freelance services.

When setting up a freelance business on the Internet be sure to hone your written communication skills. If you aren't a writer, hire someone to do the writing for you. It will pay off in the long run.
