How to write effective articles about controversial issues and opinions, at Helium and beyond

by Doreen Martel

If you are a writer for any publication, any website or you just write for fun, one of the things you will need to master is the art of writing about controversial subjects. It is important to remember that nearly every topic has proponents and opponents and therefore your writing must "play" to both sides. You can do this if you have mastered the art of writing about controversial subjects. The secret is knowing how to write about them and make your audience understand the subject.

Informative Articles

1. Know the topic - If you contemplating an article about any subject, it is important that you understand the topic thoroughly. Do not just read up on the "side" you believe in, but read as much information as you can find about both sides of the topic.

2. Be Neutral - Unless you are writing a topic that is designed to be a debate, try to keep your own opinion out of your writing. While you want the writing to exude passion, you want to try to remain neutral in your writing. This will encourage a broader base of readers as well.

3. Stick to the facts - It is difficult when you feel strongly about any topic to stick to facts. This is often because we have such strong beliefs about the issue that it clouds our writing. Sticking to known facts will help you write a stronger article that is going to provide great information to your readers.

4. Tell both sides - One of the most difficult things as a writer is trying to write factually about both sides of an issue. This is even more difficult if it is a controversial issue. It is helpful to your readers if you can present both sides of the issue so that they can make up their own mind.

Debate Articles

If you are writing about a controversial topic in a debate, the rules go out the window! Debates are meant to stimulate healthy disagreement. This does not however give you license to write non-factual information. When presenting your view on a controversial subject make sure you stick to facts as much as possible. If you have strong personal feelings about an issue they should be presented by stating that they are your feelings and beliefs and not as factual. Stressing the difference may persuade your readers to see things from your perspective.

Opinion Articles

Opinion pieces are not much different than writing for debates. You are stating your opinion on a specific topic. Opinion articles should be presented as opinions and should carry all of the passion you feel about the topic. This will help you create an exciting article that shares your beliefs with your readers.

Summary

At some time or another we are all going to have to write about a controversial subject. It is inevitable for nearly every writer. Understanding how to reach your audience means knowing your audience and creating an article that will provide a rich mix of facts and opinion. Regardless of what type of article you are writing, a controversial subject should stimulate thought and debate.
