I am a firm believer that there are angels among us!
To begin my story I need to explain that my home library is on a lower level of my house. To reach it one must walk down three steps from the front foyer. The flooring is a hard surface; all Mexican pavers. To prevent my 17 month old granddaughter from trying to maneuver the steps I always had two plastic crates filled with books as a barricade.
On Wednesday, December 5, 2007 my daughter and granddaughter were to spend the night here. My daughter was in the kitchen and I was in the library sitting at my computer. I thought my granddaughter was with her mother. All of a sudden I saw something ricochet in the hallway outside library. It was my granddaughter! Oh no! I had failed to push back the barricade to prevent her from coming down the stairs.
Of course she fell and immediately started screaming. I grabbed her and then my daughter ran in and took her from my arms. All of a sudden little Mary Gail fell unconscious in my daughter's arms! My daughter called 911 and within minutes there were at least a half dozen firemen and 3 policemen in my front room. In seconds a fireman had her braced and hooked up to machinery. My daughter asked him if she was responding. His reply was "Yes, she responds when I tickle the bottom of her feet." She did regain consciousness but they told us she would have to be taken to the ER at the nearest hospital for observation. That evening she had her first ambulance ride.
She was examined at the hospital. Despite falling on a very hard surface that little girl did not have one scratch, bruise, cut or a broken bone. After they did a C-T scan the attending physician came out to talk to us. There was no skull fracture BUT they did find a cyst on her skull which probably had been there since birth. His advice was to have it monitored regularly and sent us home.
The next day my daughter took my granddaughter to her pediatrician. He advised to have her checked by a neurosurgeon at the children's hospital. She did do that and surgery was scheduled for February 13, 2008. She was to be an out-patient.
The surgery took all of 15 minutes. The consensus of the biopsy was that the cyst was benign. That little girl literally walked out of the hospital that afternoon waving to everyone that she saw.
We continue to say that the fall was an absolute blessing in disguise. Angels surrounded that little girl! If she had not fallen it could have been years before we found out about the cyst.
Angels did not leave that hallway! A few months later I was attempting to bring a chair down the stairs. I lost my balance and fell. I too did not break any bones nor did I have a scratch or a bruise.
