Aloha attire simply put is a style that is "low key". The basic parts of the "aloha attire" is the Hawaiian or "aloha shirt" , shorts and flip flops. Of course women can also use the same, but most women who really wish to go on the "aloha attire" may also do well with the Hawaiian long gown or even pleated skirts along with the "aloha shirt". Tucked in is better too.
The best place for the "Aloha Attire" in Hawaii is The Aloha Stadium. Nothing is better than where the locals go to get their "aloha attire" and we found out that most locals in Hawaii do get their attire at the most reasonable prices at the Aloha Stadium Swap Meet and Marketplace. This stadium is just about 20 minutes away from Waikiki and is the largest flea market where manage to GET the best deals in town, most of them Hawaiian products from "aloha attire" to carpets and food snacks. It costs only a dollar for a buyer to get into the stadium which is open every Wednesday, Saturday and Sundays. Hawaiian shirts are always available in the Aloha Stadium along with the latest flip-flops. If you're fortunate enough, you can get a pair for about 5 dollars. Shorts and cotton gowns are also everywhere to be found there if you're looking for a bargain.
Another unusual place to find "aloha attire" is the Navy Exchange Mall at Pearl Harbor. Military families in Hawaii call it "the NEX" and they offer "aloha attires" for about 25% less compared to the the regular stores. Lately, the NEX has opened some of its shopping stores to the public and one an buy an "aloha attire" shirt or for about 3 dollars. If you're a woman and you want to wear the cool flowery gown (mu-mu), you an get that for about 5 to 7 dollars at the NEX but we'd have to tell you that as far as Hawaii is concerned, that is NOT "aloha attire" anymore.
For women, today's "aloha attire" may be the same as the men. Or skirts are alright. These days, cotton pleated over the "Hawaiian shirt" is in as you romp around the islands. If one really prefers a gown or a long dress, the best kind to get is called the HILO-HATTIE. This is NOT the mu-mu, which isn't considered "crisp aloha", a Hawaiian term which means clean, comfortable and laid back. The Hilo-Hattie is fashion but it is soft, comfy yet sexy and dreamy.
Aloha Apparell at Ewa Beach, Hawaii is where you can find more than 500 Hawaiian shirts and they're the best styles and quality. If you still want your mu-mu and lei or even your Hawaiian mock dress, you'll find it here. Aloha neckties are about 12 dollars each while a Hawaiian cap hat is about 7 dollars. They also offer a rather huge assortment of hula- skirts both for kids and adults. This store even sells "rugs for your surfboard"!
Shaka Time Hawaii at Iwilei Road, Honolulu is definitely worth a visit if you're looking for Hawaiian plus sizes which aren't offered by most Hawaiian stores. They also do have Hawaiian skirts and dresses of all kinds, pure cotton "aloha shirts" (unisex), Hawaiian sandals (flipflops), beach shorts, ladies blouses and shirts and sleeveless blouses for all sexes.
Aloha attire may be IN not only in Hawaii but in the mainland particularly during the summer. Loose, thin clothing, comfy and clean is what Hawaiian dressing is all about. Crisp aloha all the way - but with style of course. Always chic and comfy. That's Hawaii!
