Reflections: Going to the beach to find inner peace

by Excelsior

Created on: May 12, 2009

A hectic schedule, busy days and unprecedented stress. They are things most of us living in a modern society have, unfortunately, become acquainted to. Most seek refuge from these things in their own ways, however a beach may just be the perfect place to escape from our overdeveloped and thoroughly controlled societies.

For most, the beach is special in their own small right. There are many factors that can make the beach a hideout. It may be the gentle, but distinctive sounds of the sea, as it meets the terrain of the beach. That sound brings a sweet satisfaction to ones ears and a healthy change in frequency from all the banging and stretching of cities that never sleep. The steady woosh of the waves provides the perfect background for some meditation and inner reflection.

It may also be the waves coming ashore and dissipating upon the sands into briny foam- Wouldn't it be nice if our problems could all come to the same end? Maybe it is the extraordinary fact that the beach is the divide between two worlds, the underwater world and our world. Is that world just as stressful as ours? Just when your just about to drift off to sleep, the cool sea breeze hits you in the face, bringing you back from a state of semi-slumber. The salty smell of the beach fills your nostrils with satisfaction and you breathe a sigh of relive. Then off to the side you see two sea-gulls flying off, who knows, maybe for a joy flight, maybe in search of a meal to feast upon. Their cries are a welcome addition to that rumbling of the sea.

As you glance at your watch you see it is getting late, and you can make out the sun sliding down closer and closer to the horizon. The skies turn a bright red, as if lit on fire. Then, all of a sudden the sun appears to halt, as if to tease you, and, with the ambient noise and the smell of the water, it finally makes one last push and slides down, leaving you in a period of twilight. Then it dawns on you- no not literally, that's about 12 hours away. You become aware of the fact that there are greater things in this life rather than if your going to finish that assignment by next week or why the girl of your dreams dumped you. You realize that at this moment, you can do nothing about those things, but you can find inner peace, relax, and just enjoy the spectacle nature has given us, After all, we have only about 26,000 sunsets in one's lifetime.

It is because of this simple fact, that one can break all ties to the outside world, reflect and establish peace with himself, in an amazing atmosphere, which make the beach such an enticing spot. All of that, you concluded on a beach somewhere, nestled among sand and sea, maybe a tree, but surely, a place in which you feel free.
