I have found that call centers are a good way to get your foot in the door to a specific industry. Not only do they help you become consious of conusmer needs but it spawns ideas of how and how not to run a business. When I first graduated college, it was a little daunting finding a job. The exepectaion was that well i have a degree in business so i will get a job doing that and then in a couple of years the money will come rolling in when that big idea hits me. Well its been a couple of years and here I am, but getting back to the point, call centers offer quick promotions just thru the essence of staying around when less determined people thow down the headset and say IM OUT OF HERE! This sutited me well because in a short period of time I quicky became a senior person and was able to be then one making decisions about things. So in conclusion I recomend working in a call center if you can abide by the following cavats:
1. Attempt to find one relating to something you find interesting, ie: a finicial company or brokerage, because it counts as experience in a fields that have high barriers to entry(licences, years and years of experience, contacts).
2. Attempt to move into different departments if possible, this will do several things, it will give you a broader depth of knowledge, and you will know several different manager types who can give you recomendations for future jobs.
3. Try to come of with new an inovative ideas about how to make "the job" easier or save the company money, you may find yourself in a cushier job that is not allways on the recieving end of the phone but with the same flexabilities as working in a call center.
