possibility is the inability to leave a web page entirely. Once infiltrated into a system, it is much more than an annoyance, it is downright malicious.
Most antivirus software today takes into account this breed of virus. But a third party solution like Spy- Bot Search and Destroy can be a handy extra layer of protection.
Firewalls
Firewalls are designed to block unauthorized access to a computer while still allowing outgoing access to networks. Hackers and viral software with intent upon a computer system have to negotiate this layer of protection first if they ever wish to infiltrate the system.
While many antivirus programs are bundled with a firewall, choosing a free non-commercial version may mean needing to still fill this gap. Zone Alarm is a great choice for both Mac and PC users. It is a free version that easily works with any antivirus program already in use and it has a solid reputation. Linux users might be interested in Firestarter if they are looking for something different then the packaged solution that comes with their OS.
Prevention
The most overlooked method of security is prevention. Avoiding sites that have a reputation for wreaking havoc is good practice. The adult industry is filled with sites just waiting to give a user their next headache. Trashing emails that are obvious spam or come from unrecognizable sources is another great way to be the end of the line for a virus on the move. Also, avoid hacked software and only use a torrent from a distributor that has the legal right to distribute a file.
If the computer in question has multiple users making it impossible to keep a constant eye on, it is still possible to take these steps towards prevention. Open DNS is a non-profit organization that makes it easy to filter the web before it ever lands in a browser. It is a free solution providing security, not only for computers, but possibly for parents needing to provide safety for their children.
