New Haven, Connecticut is a town that finds itself torn by a war. This is not a war over ethics or equal rights, money or land, freedom or injustice, but over pizza. Well, more precisely "apizza," and who makes the best one in town.

The beginning of it all, 1925, Frank Pepe opens the,"Frank Pepe Pizzaria Napoletana" and sells the first pizza. The Frank Pepe Pizzaria Napoletana is a recommended first stop in your quest for the best pizza in New Haven. They still serve the same pizza they marketed in 1925 today. It is a brick-fired, crisped crust pizza with traditional Italian toppings, unless you want the white-clam pizza. The white clam pizza was an invention of Frank himself and includes olives, garlic, and fresh clams. Pepe's style of pizza is what it referred to as, "New Haven" style, and is basically all you'll find in town as the pizza obsessed locals will have it no other way.

As a side note Pepe's is actually the second pizzeria opened by Frank, the first has now been renamed the "The spot" after the building was purchased back by its original owners, and then re-purchased by Pepe. Both pizzerias serve the same menu.

Franks' own nephew opened the second pizzeria recommended on your New Haven pizza guide, Sally's Apizza. Sally's pizza contains mostly the same ingredients, as Pepe's however since the pizzeria's opening in 1938 citizens of New Haven have been at war over which pizza reigns supreme. I recommend you try them both and decide for yourself.

Leaving the family pizza line, for the third recommended pizzeria in New Haven we have Modern Apizza. Modern Apizza serves a variety of seafood pizzas most of which include clam, however unlike Pepe's White Clam pizza; they do not shuck theirs on location. Many locals feel Modern Apizza has won the pizza war because in 2008 they won a blind taste test conducted by Yale University. [1]

When visiting New Haven the plethora of architectural styles may be the hot thing to see, but pizza is a must eat, because no where in the world, expect maybe Italy, will you find pizza this good no matter what pizzeria you visit, and you'll have plenty to visit. I've mentioned three of the best in town here, but there are over 120 pizzerias in New Haven, get eating!
