Without a doubt, public school children should wear uniforms. We have to agree that the 'ball' has been dropped when it comes to setting a standard with public school attire. The school system is funded by tax-payers. Therefore, the School Board in conjunction with organizations like the PTA and representatives from the Student's Body should have an input in selecting a suitable uniform for each respective school. In this way a compromise can be arrived at. For instance, having them wear uniforms for four days and perhaps, Friday for dressing in their own attire. We could perhaps call that "Expression Day".
Some might argue that the introduction of uniforms would infringe on student's rights, and, they should have the right to express their individuality in their attire. There are many ways students can express themselves. They can express it through the arts (music/writing, etc.), maths and sciences, etc. These kids are begging for attention. They are challenging authority and nothing is done about over the years. We can all observe this in the manner in which they wear the baggy pants exposing their undergarments. They are definitely eye-sores. A makeover is greatly needed.
The public school system is made up a great number of less fortunate among us. Parents are trying to make ends meet in putting food on the table. In addition, they have to provide lunches for their children on a daily basis. The cost to dress one child who outgrows his/her outfits rapidly is astronomical for these families, especially those with single parents. Instituting a uniform system in schools would take gigantic pressure off both parents/students. The government could get involved whereby discounts could be offered to each household with children in the public school system. Moreover, specialized stores could be formed so as to deal with the creation of these attires.
Students already have peer pressure issues to deal with along with keeping up with the schools' curriliculum and other extra activities. Of course, they will rebel with the concept of uniforms and, that is expected. It is part of growing pains. There is nothing wrong with setting standards, regulations and commom decency. They will only prepare you for the real world. Yes, there are rules and regulations in the real world! The School Board should no longer evade this very important issue. As a matter of fact, students will certainly obtain the opportunity to focus more on important matters like test scores.
