On the dole? Made redundant? If you are among the unemployed, you probably have been reading tips from all the job search gurus on the Internet on how to get that new position. One thing that is stressed is the importance of networking; getting the word out that you are looking for a job by interacting with friends and building relationships with acquaintances. Volunteering is a great way to help others, and at the same time, help yourself by increasing your network of friends, maintaining your skills, and perhaps learning some new ones. For instance, Ladies, if you have ever yearned to learn how to use a table saw so you can finish that trim in the bathroom, join a crew with
Women Build, an affiliate of Habitat For Humanity.
Women volunteers working on crews with a Habitat supervisor build houses from top to bottom in several countries and across the United States, including Minnesota and the Twin Cities area. A crew usually puts in one eight hour day with jobs being assigned according to project need on that day. No special talent is required. If you can pick up a paint brush, clean up sawdust, or pound a nail, all efforts are appreciated. Hands on training is provided for the more difficult tasks if you want to learn. Check out the comments on the Habitat Women Build website to read heartfelt stories of appreciation and rebirth told by the homeowners and the volunteers. Your experience may also lead you to an entirely new career in building construction, design or decorating.
The Salvation Army is an organization that has opportunities for volunteers to make a difference in many areas, from seasonal bell ringer to working at a food shelf, assisting with emergency disaster relief or mentoring youths. If you enjoy working with young children, the Salvation Army Summer Camp is looking for help from June through August. Volunteers assist with meal service, help with arts and craft projects and supervise field trips. You may even get to visit those local attractions that you have never made it to, pointing out places of interest to create a sense of community pride in the children you are leading. During the school year, after-class tutors are needed for elementary through high school students at schools in the Minneapolis and St. Paul area. Your talent is needed, especially if you have had some teaching experience. If you are looking for a teaching position, this is a great way to get experience in your field while helping a young student who is struggling
