service is usually very stable and reliable, it is best to stick with it if you are in any of these categories. Other than these exceptions though, many people don't have to have a landline if they decide they don't need one.
Living without a landline phone today isn't a big deal anymore. Many younger people have never had a landline and see no need for one. Many technical people use VOIP services and have done so for years. It is only recently that the Average Joe has decided to use these services exclusively. Each has drawbacks, each has its own benefits. For instance, with a mobile phone you need to make sure that the area you live in has good reception. You don't want to only have a mobile phone as your sole means of communication if you have dead spots in your own home. Always having to go outside to talk on the phone can be a pain. With VOIP services you need broadband Internet service whether it is DSL or cable in order for it to work, so that's an extra expense if you don't have broadband already.
There is also an issue with 911 when it comes to VOIP. Many VOIP services to cannot connect you directly to 911 like a landline telephone company will. In this case, if you choose to go with a VOIP service, it may be a good idea to keep an old, out of service cellphone charged up so that in emergencies you can dial 911 without dealing with delays. Some VOIP services offer the 911 service, others don't. It's best to do your research before disconnecting your landline in these cases. If you decide to go with VOIP rather than a mobile phone, charge up and use an old mobile phone for this particular service rather than relying solely on your VOIP phone.
Other than that issue, there really is no reason why a landline would be required any longer if you really feel that it's unnecessary. There are just too many cheaper, reliable alternatives out there.
